Puligny-Montrachet
Puligny-Montrachet borders Chassagne-Montrachet to the south, with which it shares the Montrachet vineyard. The water table lies so high that there are barely any cellars in the village.
Our range includes wines from Puligny-Montrachet by producers including Domaine Leflaive, Domaine d'Auvenay, Paul Pernot, Jacques Carillon, JC Ramonet and Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. If you would like to explore the Côte de Beaune further, you will also find Meursault, Corton and Corton-Charlemagne in our range.
Grape and style
Puligny-Montrachet stands for chardonnay at its most refined. The wines are taut, precise and mineral, with aromas of citrus, white flowers, almond and a hint of chalk or flint. Compared with Meursault, they are less round and buttery, and more focused on tension and purity.
Their structure is carried by acidity, not by weight. This makes them elegant in their youth and at the same time suited to long ageing.
Location and soil
The village lies below Meursault and above Chassagne-Montrachet. The best vineyards lie on the mid-slope, where limestone and marl soil gives the wine its characteristic delicacy. In this village almost all of the land is planted with chardonnay.
Well-known Premiers Crus are Les Pucelles, Les Combettes, Les Folatières and Le Cailleret. Each has its own traits: Les Pucelles is often rich and opulent, Les Combettes taut and mineral, Les Folatières fragrant and fresh.
Classification and rules
Puligny-Montrachet is particularly rich in Grands Crus. Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet lie partly in Puligny and partly in Chassagne, while Chevalier-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet belong entirely to Puligny. These plots lie on and around a narrow strip of the slope.
The village name is derived from the Montrachet vineyard. A wine may only carry the name Puligny-Montrachet if it comes from the delimited area. See also Montrachet.
Ageing and serving
Puligny-Montrachet is suited to long ageing. Over the years the better wines develop notes of honey, nuts and baked fruit, while the minerality remains intact. Opening early is possible, but calls for an hour in a cool glass to open up.
Serve at 11 to 13 °C. The wine goes well with langoustines, pan-fried monkfish, veal with a light sauce and mild goat’s cheese.
