Charmes-Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin is a grand cru in Gevrey-Chambertin, lying below Chambertin. The soil is deeper here, which makes the wines approachable younger.
Our range includes wines from Charmes-Chambertin by producers including Armand Rousseau, Joseph Roty, Denis Bachelet, Domaine Ponsot, Domaine Arlaud and Domaine Duroche. If you would like to explore Gevrey-Chambertin further, you will also find Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin in our range.
Vineyard and soil
Charmes-Chambertin lies south of Chambertin, on the lower half of the slope towards the plain. The soil here is somewhat deeper and contains more clay and sand over the limestone bedrock. The vineyard is broad and fairly open, so it receives plenty of light and warmth.
Mazoyères-Chambertin adjoins it on the south side, and its wine may be sold under the name Charmes-Chambertin.
Grape and style
Charmes-Chambertin is also made from pinot noir. As the name suggests, the wines are more approachable and softer than those of the neighbouring Chambertin. Expect ripe red fruit, cherries, floral notes and a round, supple texture with fine tannins.
The powerful backbone of Gevrey is present, but the wine shows itself more quickly as expressive and sensual. This makes it appealing even when relatively young.
Classification and rules
The name Charmes-Chambertin denotes a grand cru appellation of its own within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. The rules are stricter than for the village appellation: lower maximum yields, hand-selected grapes and stricter quality control.
There are many owners with small plots, so the differences between producers are noticeable. This is typical of Burgundy and makes choosing a domaine part of the decision.
