Griotte-Chambertin
Griotte-Chambertin is, at barely three hectares, one of the smallest grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard lies in a slight hollow, sheltered from the wind.

Vineyard and soil
Griotte-Chambertin is one of the smallest grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin and lies adjacent to Chapelle-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin. The soil is chalky, fairly shallow and stony, and the vineyard sits on a gently sloping hillside. The name refers to the griotte, the sour cherry, an allusion to the typical aroma of the wine.
Grape and style
The wine is made from pinot noir and is generally softer and more refined than its powerful neighbour Chambertin. Expect cherries, raspberries, roses and a silky mouthfeel with fine tannins. The wine is geared more towards elegance than power.
This places it closer to the charming side of the Gevrey grands crus, in line with Charmes-Chambertin, but with more finesse.
Classification and rules
Griotte-Chambertin has its own grand cru appellation within Gevrey-Chambertin. Because of its small size, total production is limited and there are only a few owners.
The rules are those of a grand cru: a lower maximum yield, pinot noir only, and higher requirements for grape ripeness than for village wines.
